Women's Issues and the Law

Program Description

Though women constitute a little more than half the population, their struggle to gain equal access and influence in our society and its legal system has often been met with resistance and obstacles. Women have increased their participation in the legal system, the corporate environment, and other aspects of our society contributing to its adjustment to the 21 st century. Likewise, as our society changes so do these issues concerning women, their rights, and their respective roles.

In recognition of their ever-growing influence, the Legal Studies Institute is proud to present Women's Issues and the Law . This course is instructed by practicing attorneys and judges who are women, thereby adding personal experience to the academic and legal components. This program seeks to provide participants with a greater understanding of women's issues and their role in today's society through the discussion and analysis of the legal issues that affect them the most. These special topics include women's rights as victims of sexual crimes and domestic violence, rights associated with child custody and marital law, and recent court decisions (some involving discrimination cases) that impact their legal rights.

Women's Issues and the Law is recommended for both men and women alike in any profession. Students in the Paralegal Certificate Program may take this course as an elective. This course is open to the general public and to all professionals who wish to inform themselves more on the role of women in today's society through the legal context.

*Continuing Legal Assistans education units from NALA are provided to students after completion of the program.
